Bill Ranford was the hero of the 1989-90 season, where Grant Fuhr received a shoulder injury on December 16th. Furh would be out for 32 games. Ranford lost the next game to Chicago 6-5, but came back with a five-game winning streak, where he only let the rubber hit his twine six times. He ended December with a 8-1 record and an amazing 1.89 GAA, which earned him the NHL's Player of the Month award.
That December month was crucial for the Oilers' success. "The team realized it could be very competitive," said Randy Gregg. "We were at the top of our game and we were the best team in the NHL." Of course, the Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup that season.
