Life Story:
I grew up living, watching, playing hockey. Memories of the Oilers Dynasty are permantly embedded in my memories, since I rarely missed a single show of HNIC. I played whatever kind of hockey I could - Ice hockey, street hockey, parking lot hockey (using aluminum stick blades), floor hockey, living room hockey, table hockey, air hockey, and hockey video games. I've met a lot of friends playing ice hockey, either playing for or against them.
After my grade seven hockey season, my dad lost his job at a government-run plant. We couldn't afford to send me to hockey again, and I was devestated! Luckily, the pace of school was increasing, and that took away some of the blow. But my love of hockey still showed, as project after project was somehow related to hockey. I eventually developed a deep knowledge of the game, studying ways of trying to defeat the trap and a number of plays were created in my mind.
I played three years of hockey as a goaltender. That really showed through in other sports, as everybody in P.E. wanted me to be the goalie in sports like soccer, handball, and of course the two-week unit of hockey.
I started to notice something as I entered high school - my marks were a lot higher that before! I checked back with my report cards from the past, and my marks started to go up in the end of grade seven - when I stopped playing hockey. I finally found a positive side for not playing hockey!
In the end of my grade 10 (sophmore) year, I really took an interest in the Oilers again, because of the playoff race. Since about grade six, I started to follow the Red Wings. I've had little experience in HTML, but I started to make an Oilers homepage (Behind the Derrick - Edmonton Oilers). It was submitted to search engines on March 21, 1997. It's changed phenomially, going from a no-frame page with the default grey background and no graphics, to the page you see today.
The page that you see now, The Dynasty Years, came as a result of a scare. You may know about people like Les Alexander. In the 1997-98 season, the Oilers were put up for sale by Peter Pocklington. Les Alexander came up from Houston and put down a bid. A group of locals, however, did manage to buy the team. During the 30-day period between the bid and the purchase, I got the idea for this page.
Another thing that came out of the page was an offer from Michael John Kozak to write for the Oil Slick Magazine. I've extended my knowledge even further with this experience, and will continue writing for it as long as I can. I've slowly moved up the ladder from a columinst, to assistant programmer, to post game show host. I now manage the NHL Standings, player stats, and about one-fifth of the games are covered by myself, as well as writing regular articles. I recieve both extra english and information processing (computers) credits for all my work with both of these pages.
What will the future hold for me? I've planned to pursue Computer Science at the University of Alberta, a four year program, to get my Bachelor of Science and a buisness minor. From then on, I may take some journalism courses and pursue a job in journalism. But my major focus is to get my Bachelor of Science and get a job programming (and all that boring stuff).
